On Saturday, October 2, 1999, the past will come alive once again at the Gwinnett County Airport. EAA Chapter 690, based at Briscoe Field, will host aircraft from around the Southeast at the 9th Annual Fall Classic Air Fair.
The event is reminiscent of the days when barnstorming pilots traveled throughout the countryside, landing in pastures, county fairgrounds or any available open field to offer local towns' people rides for a modest fee. This bit of Americana will once again come to Gwinnett County.
This year’s Fall Classic Air Fair will begin with a traditional pancake breakfast served from 8:30 - 10:30 AM. The event will continue throughout the day. Saturday’s activities will feature aircraft from the Golden, Classic and Future Classic days of aviation as well as numerous homebuilt airplanes, built by their pilots.
In keeping with the theme of the day, biplane rides will be available to the public for a nominal fee. Two local pilots will be flying people in their antique Stearman and Waco biplanes on introductory flights. Antique Cars, Ham Radio, Period Music and an old fashion Corn Roast will complement the aviation theme for those attending. Special aviation youth orientated activities are planned.
There will also be at least one Nieuport 11 on-site to show the construction techniques used.
Admission to the Biplane Fall Classic is free and the pancake breakfast is open to the public. Additional information is available through Mr. Steve Ashby at 770-413-7112 or srapc@mindspring.com via eMail.
