Normally
ultralights are not permitted to fly-in to an airshow especially one in
what may be called a "congested area" as Daniel Field, Augusta, Georgia,
is. Again, this year, the FAA is permitting the ultralights to fly in.
This permission was given only if the Daniel Field airport manager, Buster
Boshears, gave his permission also. Buster has given his permission as
long as the Boshears Chairman, Ed Johnson, also gave his permission. Ed
has given his permission.
It
is very important that those flying ultralights follow standard pattern
procedure and do nothing "fancy" when taking off -- just climb out and
leave. It would be unfortunate for all ultralights to lose their Boshears
fly in privilege because of the actions of one or a few.
Ultralights
will be able to fly-in to Daniel Field Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
September 21 - 23.
On
Friday ultralights should arrive before 5:30 PM -- but
arrive earlier, just in case -- (when
the field closes for the airshow). On Saturday and Sunday they should plan
to arrive AFTER the balloon lift off (scheduled for 7:15-7:30 AM).
Boshears Chairman Ed Johnson is asking that the ultralights come in between
8:00 and 9:30 AM on Saturday and Sunday.
On
Friday, the ultralights can leave after 6:45 PM or when the field opens.
On Saturday and Sunday they will be able to leave each day in a "window"
starting at 6:00 PM (after the air show) or earlier if the FAA opens the
field early, before the balloons take off. All these times are currently
tentative as of the update date on this Webpage.
BE
PREPARED TO GO INTO A HOLDING PATTERN AROUND THE FIELD IN THE EVENT THAT
THE FIELD IS NOT OPEN YET BECAUSE OF A LATE BALLOON LIFT-OFF! IT'S THE
FAA, NOT THE AIRSHOW ORGANIZERS, WHO OPENS THE FIELD.
Please
come as a group, if you can, and the point man/flight leader
would be the only one to call ground control at 123.05 mhz. To avoid congested
areas it would be best to come in over the Bobby Jones expressway and
over the golf course, then take the runway that the ground controllers
tell you. Stay in the pattern (see the charts) and when on the ground you
will be handled and led individually, in a line, by the ground
controllers. Shut the engine off when they signal you.
You
will be able to camp next to your aircraft. Bring screw-in tie-down stakes,
or if the ground is too hard straight stakes (have a ground crew bring
those) -- we've found that giant spikes can be obtained cheaply at Home
Depot that make perfect tie-down stakes. Make sure you stay with your ultralight
until you are registered by a Boshears person who will have a pass and
some free "goodies" for you. Also you will be entered into the judging.
REMEMBER:
Don't abuse the privilege, and it is a privilege for ultralights to come
to Daniel Field during Boshears. The FAA won't bother you unless you buzz
the crowd or do something stupid!
